Thursday, November 3rd, 2011 will mark the 94th anniversary of the dedication and formal opening of Camp Zachary Taylor, in Louisville Ky. Camp Zachary Taylor was named after the 12th President of the United States, ‘Ol Rough and Ready, Zachary Taylor. It was the birthplace of the 84th Division of the National Army and now is all but gone except for a few lone landmarks.
This photograph, which documents the events of that November morning 94 years ago, was accompanied by thrilling account of the ceremonies and speeches given out by Governor of Kentucky, A. O. Stanley and General Harry Hale.
“Although we have raised this flag but a little more than 100 feet here, it is floating high enough to be seen around the world. I have fancied that its folds inspire not alone the gallant thousands who have saluted it, but that also, with tear-rimmed eyes and with maimed and broken bodies, dauntless heroes of France, shattered legions in the Alps, and the world gazing upon the flag today with the hope that this nations strength is destined to make the world safe for democracy” A. O. Stanley, Governor of Ky, Nov. 3, 1917.
